EVEN THOUGH Jake already paged through Alex’s notebook, Alex still commences construction by walking through his plans. It helps him focus and choose what to do first when he lays out everything verbally.

“So, my theme this year is ‘Let It Snow.’ The color scheme is white, silver, and blue, and we literally can’t have too many snowflakes.” Alex sweeps his arm to indicate the supplies they bought today. “We’ll drape tinsel from the roof and wrap it around the supports, but we’re going to have a ton of snowflakes to break it up so it’s not just”—he does jazz hands—“tinsel! Because anyone can cover a golf cart in tinsel.”

“Right,” Jake says, looking like he’s trying not to smile. “Where’s the artistry?”

Alex’s mouth twitches with an answering smile, but he tries to maintain a very serious expression. “Exactly. I figure we can make paper snowflakes for the inside of the cart, where they won’t blow around as much, and card stock on the supports. And we’ll have to find good spots for these big light-up ones”—because obviously he got big light-up ones—“and do you think the tinsel ones on the front, maybe?”

Jake blinks like he’s surprised to be consulted. Maybe Alex hasn’t been clear that he considers this a collaboration. Sure, he’s got plans and sketches, but for one thing, you never know exactly which golf cart you’re going to get when you rent one. For another, what he loves about this whole thing is doing it with someone else. Maybe he’s only known Jake for a couple days, but it feels, weirdly, like longer.

Doing a project like this runs the risk of imploding a new friendship, but Alex has a good feeling that it’s going to make them closer.

“You don’t think the tinsel ones would be good on the front?” Alex asks, chewing at his lip.

Jake folds his arms over his chest and furrows his brow. “No, I think that would work. But….” The divot between his eyebrows gets deeper, then smoothes out. “What if we used some of this cotton batting to do clouds at the front of the cart—like a storm coming? Then all the tinsel and snowflakes.”

With a gasp of delight, Alex says, “Yes! Oh my god, I love that! Jake, you’re a genius!” The pleased, proud expression on Jake’s face is better than any amount of Christmas cheer. He’s glowing from the praise like it’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to him. That makes Alex’s chest fill with a fierce feeling of… protectiveness? But he barely knows Jake, so that would be stupid.

Still. Making Jake feel good about himself could get addictive.

Anyway, back to the golf cart before he gets entirely distracted, which would be way too easy. Talking to Jake makes time fly by, and unfortunately, time is in short supply. “The centerpiece is obviously the snow globe on top of the cart, complete with real fake snow. That’s going to be the trickiest part to rig up.”

“And to secure,” Jake points out. “I
